The Anvil - A Prophetic Picture

"I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'These are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.'" - (Zechariah 13:9 NLT)

"These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold--though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world." - (1 Peter 1:7 NLT)

"Anvil - a heavy steel or iron block with a flat top, concave sides, and typically a pointed end, on which metal can be hammered and shaped." - Online Dictionary

During a prayer meeting a few years ago, I had a mental picture of an Anvil. This was a time of intercessory prayer for our Church and our community. We were engaged in spiritual warfare. I believe God communicates through mental images and impressions to encourage us. I don't think every thought or picture that pops into my head is a message from God to the Church!

But for me, it seems like a good picture of what many believers need to think about, especially in times of intense spiritual attack. God uses the testing of our faith to strengthen us and forge us into vessels for his purposes. Without trials and testing, we become weak and spiritually ineffective. All bodybuilders know that growth comes from resistance. So, spiritual growth requires us to resist the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Fire is a metaphor used in various ways in the Bible. God uses the fire of his holiness to purge sin from us. He uses stressful circumstances to purify our hearts and to make us battle-ready. Our battles are not with people but with worldviews and ideologies that clash with the Kingdom of God. In the Old Testament, God told Israel to drive out enemies from the land he gave them. Some wonder why He didn't destroy all of Israel's enemies for them. But, I believe God wanted his people to grow stronger by obeying his commands and learning how to fight for freedom based on his covenant commitment to them.

As New Testament believers, our enemies are spiritual beings. We must be diligent to drive them (demonic strongholds) out of our lives. We must help others experience freedom, also. The attacks never stop, but our goal is to become stronger as we grow dependent on God. In a sense, we become a weapon forged by the Master's hand that he uses to drive out spiritual darkness.

No Compromise With The Spirit Of Antichrist

“Bloved do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.” – (I John 4:1-3 ESV)

An alarming number of Christians have aligned themselves with the spirit of the antichrist. They teach universalism (that you can find salvation apart from Jesus). Many religions acknowledge Jesus as a great prophet, but unless they confess that he is LORD, they cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Jesus is God. And trusting Him is the only way to Heaven. For me to teach anything else would be to give into the spirit of the antichrist, which is the prevailing spirit of the age in which we live. Christians must see this as spiritual warfare. We wage war when we proclaim the truth of the Gospel and by prayer, without fear of those who oppose the message.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me.” – John 14:6 ESV

If you are a Christian, don’t allow yourself to fall under the spell of religious pluralism (the view that all sincere people of other religions will go to Heaven) is growing stronger in our culture. Spending time praying and studying biblical doctrine are ways to protect yourself from deception.

We must seek to live in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or we will begin to comprise the truth and go astray. We must remain spiritually diligent and stay alert.

Believers are to live counter to the culture they live in without being obnoxious. We should be known for our love, yet without compromise.

The Destructive Nature Of Sin

The Word:

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” – 1 Corinthians 1:18 ESV

“For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” – 1 Peter 4:17 ESV

“He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” – Colossians 2:15 ESV

Reflection:

Until we realize the destructive nature of sin, the cross WILL NOT make sense to us. Those who see the cross of Christ as unnecessary or see God as a divine child abuser have no concept of the power of sin. The death of Jesus on the cross disarmed demonic powers and freed us from total enslavement to sin. Jesus’ final sacrifice of himself ended the need for any more bloodshed to atone for sin forever. He gave himself freely out of his love for humanity. Christ paid the sin debt that we could not pay. The cross was a demonstration of God’s self-giving love for humanity.

Yet, much of the Church has neglected the power available to us to live an overcoming life. We all sin, but we do not have to live in complete slavery to it.

As the Church goes, so goes our society.

Cover-ups and scandals plague the Church in America. Disobedient Church leaders and members have re-armed dark principalities and powers through destructive sin patterns. Satan only has power over a believer if we give it to him through unrepentant sin.

The Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I ask that you would grant repentance to the American Church. You have many faithful gospel witnesses, still standing for and living the truth. But, much of Your Church in America has compromised with sin. Forgive us for not speaking the truth in love to those who do not know You yet. Revive Your Church. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Guard Your Thoughts

 The Word:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds”. 2 Corinthians 10:4 ESV

A Reflexion:

” I can’t help you, I can’t even help myself.” These were the thoughts of a friend of mine trying to give counsel to a young person. I believe in cultural strongholds. The influence of paganism is evident in the western world. Cultural Marxism has gained a foothold in America’s educational system – which influences every sphere of society. The Believer’s mission is to share the countercultural message of the Kingdom of God to the world. We can’t change our culture unless we allow God to change us. Learning how to watch over our souls in prayer is significant for our influence to be effective. Hopefully, this quote by Dean Sherman will be helpful:

” I have heard people use the term strongholds to refer to humanism, Islam, communism, and other religions and institutions. However, in II Corinthians, strongholds does not refer to massive, complex systems, human or demonic. Here it refers to the strongholds of the mind. These strongholds are castles in the air built up in our minds through wrong thinking—through unbelieving, depressed, fearful, and negative thinking. . . . Every military post has guards. They stand quietly at their posts until they hear a rustling in the bushes. Then they immediately ask: “Who goes there?” and are prepared to evict any intruder. We too need to post a guard at the gate of our minds to check the credentials of every thought and every imagination, ready to cast down that which is not true, not righteous, or not of God. If it doesn’t belong, out it goes. This is spiritual warfare: being alert to every thought. The Bible says, “As he thinks within himself, so he is” (Proverbs 23:7). One of the devil’s greatest schemes is to nullify the effectiveness of Christians who are genuinely saved. Even if they go to heaven when they die, Satan will be happy to blunt their lives while on earth. He disables them, stealing their days, months, and years by influencing them to think wrongly. Unfortunately, Satan has successfully neutralized thousands of potential victors this way.” (1)

Watch And Pray:

Father, we thank you for the spiritual weapons you have given us. Help us to meditate upon Your Word daily. Help us start each day in prayer and to post a guard at the gate of our minds. Your Word says that the way we think dictates our behavior. Lead us in victory over our minds so that we can be effective agents for your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Kingdom In The Midst Of Our Enemies

 The Word:

“… In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33 ESV

“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4 ESV

We live in a time of unprecedented danger from biological and nuclear weapons. Recently the world witnessed a Russian attack on a nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

“For the first time in history, a nation at war attacked a nuclear power plant Friday with potentially catastrophic effect. Russia launched a missile barrage in the middle of the night, setting off explosions and fires, and raining down bullets so Ukrainian firefighters couldn’t battle the fire. They did eventually get it under control and the most vulnerable targets survived, but nuclear control experts were flabbergasted and furious; a meltdown could have killed tens of thousands. Director Rafael Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency called on European nations to create a no-fly zone for the Ukrainian reactors, and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said, “It is a question of the security of the whole world!” (Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant via AP)

Now we hear of possible dangerous biological agents stored in research labs in Ukraine. We hear different views (and conspiracy theories) of why Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. Intercessors have a responsibility to pray for fellow believers in Russia and Ukraine. We cannot trust the news media – we need discernment. We live in a world influenced by the Father of lies. We all live in enemy territory whether we are in a hot war zone or not. In reality, our enemies are spiritual. God has given us prayer and the proclamation of the gospel as weapons against evil ideologies.

bonhoffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer died a martyr at the hands of Adolf Hitler during the closing days of World War 2. He was an example of a man who stayed faithful to Jesus to the end. God is calling each of us to embrace the Kingdom of God over nationalism or globalism. Patriotism can be a good thing, but our ultimate allegiance must be to King, Jesus.

“Jesus Christ lived in the midst of his enemies. At the end all his disciples deserted him. On the Cross he was utterly alone, surrounded by evildoers and mockers. For this cause he had come, to bring peace to the enemies of God. So the Christian, too, belongs not in the seclusion of a cloistered life but in the thick of foes. There is his commission, his work. ‘The kingdom is to be in the midst of your enemies. And he who will not suffer this does not want to be of the Kingdom of Christ; he wants to be among friends, to sit among roses and lilies, not with the bad people but the devout people. O you blasphemers and betrayers of Christ! If Christ had done what you are doing who would ever have been spared.’ (Luther) (1)

Watch And Pray:

Father, Jesus said that in this world, we have tribulation. While fear is gripping people, you have called your children to be peacemakers in our spheres of influence. Help us discern the times in which we live. Help Your children to overcome this present evil age. And to be a people of prayer and to become watchman on the walls. Guide our prayers by The Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Why Do The Nations Rage? A Reflection On Psalm Two

 “Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
“As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” – (Psalm 2 ESV)

The nations are in turmoil and they always have been. Carl Marx was just one of many evil men throughout history who sought the destruction of God’s people. Atheistic communism was a demonically inspired plan to erase freedom to worship God from the earth. And to enslave the masses under totalitarian rule. Excessive materialism is another tactic of evil principalities and powers to lead God’s people into apostasy. The fruit of apostasy (falling away) is a rebellious self-sufficient lack of dependence on God.

The question: “Why do the nations rage?” Because ever since the garden of Eden, man has believed the serpents lie that we can be like God(Gen. 3:5.)

The rejection of God’s rule is senseless.

Satan is behind the insanity of leaders who seek to hinder the work of God on the earth. The devil knows that his time is short (Rev. 12:12), so he and his principalities and powers work through political leaders to create wars. Religious leaders along with Herod and Pilate united together to kill Jesus. And ever since, leaders of nations have been the puppets of invisible evil overlords – seeking to root out Christianity from the earth.

Psalm two shows us a picture of the future. Jesus has risen from the dead and laughs in disgust at their attempts to overthrow his kingdom.

Jesus will confound the rulers of this age. He will triumph over the arrogance of those who mount a rebellion against his rule. Leaders of this world who hate Christ are blind men leading blind followers.

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” – (1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV)

Watch and Pray:

Father, deliver your people from leaders who foolishly devise plots against Jesus Christ and his people. I ask for the salvation of world leaders. May they experience your mercy and seek your wisdom. Some have collaborated throughout history to free themselves from Your righteous rule. But, their plans are futile. Father, you have installed King Jesus as head of your Church. You have given him the nations and will bring the power of earthly rulers to an end. Let Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Deliver us from evil. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Pray For The Children: The Identity Crisis

We live in a time where it’s dangerous to be a child. It always has been throughout history because of war and starvation worldwide. But, with the advent of the internet and radical social change, it is much worse now.

Our children are under spiritual attack.

While some children live in active war zones, others are experiencing an assault on their minds. The latter have not experienced the terror of bombs dropping on their homes. Sadly their thinking is being assaulted by their culture.

America and the western world are facing an identity crisis. This should not be happening with Christian kids, but it is.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” – (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” – (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)

As parents and grandparents, we must be watchmen on the walls for our children. Our job is to pray for and teach them the Christian faith. If our children know who they are in Christ, they can resist cultural pressure. But, that information alone is not enough. Young people must also experience the love of Christ for themselves. This is where prayer and action are most valuable.

It takes the power of the Holy Spirit to transform the human heart. And our children need to see the love and good works demonstrated by parents and grandparents. Many of us have failed in the past. But most of us still have an opportunity to contribute as spiritual mentors. The next generation needs our prayers and support.

God ordained the family before he formed the Church. So, Satan has been at war with families since the time of Adam and Eve. Strong and healthy families are the backbone of the Church and society.

Watch and Pray: Father, move upon parents’ and grandparents’ hearts to teach the younger generation how God sees them. As believers, our identity is in Christ. God is not the author of gender confusion. (1) You made us all male and female. Lord Jesus, help us to destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God. And to take every thought captive to obey Christ. (2) In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

The Spiritual Power Behind Political Chaos

“My kingdom is not of this world.” – Jesus

” For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. – Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” – Ephesians 6:12-13 ESV

We are living in spiritually dark times in America. Political divisions are causing great anxiety in our country. Many in the evangelical community have lost sight of the spiritual nature of this battle. All forms of media have been weaponized and used to divide our nation.

The political civil war that we are in is the fruit of cultural chaos. We cannot blame the Russians, the Chinese, or Middle Eastern countries that hate us – we are our biggest enemy.

We have allowed spiritual darkness into our Churches and our culture. There is very little difference in the lifestyle choices of those who claim to follow Jesus and those who do not.

The fact is we live in a materialistic culture that understands very little about supernatural cosmic beings. And the consequences of opening spiritual doors through rebellion to the revealed Word of God.

We have given dark powers greater access to the very soul of our nation.

Much of our cultural and political chaos is the consequence of an anti-supernatural worldview in the American church. Our focus has been more on the political landscape than what is going on in the spiritual realm.

Both nationalism and marxism are antithetical to the Kingdom of God.

Cosmic Powers are behind the chaotic political decisions made by world leaders. The Kingdom of God – is not of this world.

Our real enemies are spiritual forces, not political parties.

A return to prayer is desperately needed. We must follow Jesus’ example of blessing and serving those who hate us. I am not saying that Christians should not be involved in politics. But that we need to understand the powers behind political ideologies on the right and the left. As followers of Jesus, we must come to terms with what the Apostle Paul said,  “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood..”

God's Empowering Presence

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” (Romans 16:20 ESV)

God is always calling his people into deeper communion with himself. The Holy Spirit is nudging us to launch out into the deep. The Spirit leads us into deeper waters to experience more of God’s empowering presence. Growing in intimacy with him causes us to live in peace.

The sleeping Church is awakening to recognize that Satan is the source of our problem. People are not our real enemies. The devil is behind all strife and division.

The Lord is restoring those who have grown weary to re-enter the cosmic battle against spiritual darkness. We stand against darkness by walking in the light of truth. Our focus should be on Jesus, not the evil one.

We grow in discernment and holiness when we humble ourselves through prayer and worship.

It’s time for those who have fallen to stand back up and experience his mercy and grace. Broken people that have become unfruitful can bear fruit again as we learn the secret of abiding in Christ. God is extending his hand of grace and mercy to all that will take it. He will deliver us from the pit we dug for ourselves when we turn from sin. Grace will not leave us in our sin but will empower us to overcome it.

The God of peace will crush satan under our feet so that we can live to fight another day.

Storm Clouds Are Approaching

(I originally posted this article on another blog back in 2020. The Storm is upon us now. It's time to wake up and make intercessory prayer a priority.)

Storm clouds are approaching America at a rapid speed. The time is now to allow the LORD to examine our hearts. It’s time to turn from our willful disobedience to God. It’s time to return to Jesus. Much of the Church in America has compromised with spiritual darkness. We have allowed the values of our culture to shape our thinking.

While we must stand up for justice, we must not align ourselves with movements with dark spiritual roots. Riots in our streets, pestilence, and anarchy abound. Civil war seems to be a real possibility as foreign enemies could take advantage of this situation. God is not the author of this chaos.

Those who follow Jesus have a responsibility to seek and pursue peace. But compromising with evil is never the answer. Christians are to live out the gospel and stand in the gap. The gap is an opening in the wall of an ancient city. Walls were to keep out foreign invaders.

The Watchmen were there to fill in the opening caused by an attack by an enemy. And to be lookouts on behalf of the city. We stand in the gap today by praying for the protection of our cities - and God’s mercy. Without repentance in the church, we can do very little to help the world around us.

I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.” – Ezekiel 22:30

Overcoming Evil

“Then the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!” So he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  Look, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions and on the full force of the enemy, and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names stand written in heaven.” – Luke 10:17-20 NET

Jesus has sealed his cosmic victory over the forces of evil through his death, burial, and resurrection from the dead. When demons are being cast out, the devil is cast down. Satan (the satan) is not a personal name – it’s a title. The New Testament refers to this leader of the demonic realm as the devil. He is an accuser, slanderer, and adversary of God’s people. He seeks to obstruct, oppose, divide, and wage war on the world.

One way the devil wages war with us is with godless ideologies, that result in the persecution of believers all over the planet. His agenda is carried out through ethnic and territorial conflict. He is behind war, disease, death, and extreme poverty in this world.

The present turmoil in America is demonically inspired and led by the ancient serpent himself. The lines between good and evil in the political battle between the right and the left are sometimes blurred.

Marxism is atheistic at its core. The devil’s mission is to lead all nation’s astray and into chaos, and Carl Marx was one of his evil apostles. Excessive materialism or crony capitalism can be just as dangerous to our souls, but it is much more subtle. But freedom (even with its abuses) is always preferable to an Orwellian society.

While the serpent has lost the war with God over the world – we still must fight him until Christ returns. Scholars often refer to the “already and not yet of the Kingdom.” Even though the devil has been defeated – he still takes people captive to do his will. He has been dethroned but still engages in guerilla warfare on this planet. When someone turns to Christ they leave the realm of spiritual darkness that he leads to becoming children of the light – led by King Jesus.

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” – Rev. 12:11 KJV

If you are reading this then you are being called to wage war against the fallen one and his army. But how do we fight? We overcome our ancient foe through the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony while living a surrendered life. We learn to pray and oppose evil and injustice in all its forms. We proclaim and live the gospel of the Kingdom and seek the reconciliation of people to God. We love our neighbor as ourselves and speak the truth about God’s moral and ethical commands, which can only be lived out through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Those who seek social change through destructive acts are being led astray by the evil one. As Christians in America, we must pause and ask ourselves; are we seeking God for a spiritual solution or a political one to the turmoil we are presently in?

Let’s pray for God to change the hearts of our enemies. While we demonstrate the love of God to our neighbors.

The Watchman

My Dad served in the Navy during World War Two. After basic training, he was assigned to patrol the beaches of California at night. Japanese submarines were known to be off the coast. Consequently, diligence and alertness were required of those on Shore Patrol. One of his additional duties was to guard a checkpoint on a Naval Base in San Diego. As a Seaman second-class, he had the authority to refuse to let anyone (no matter their rank) without proper documentation through his gate. One day an officer tried to get through the checkpoint without his ID. Even though the officer threatened my Dad with court-martial, he refused to let him enter. My Father had to draw his weapon. The highly agitated officer did not want to comply with the command of his subordinate. The incident was investigated, and my Dad was fully exonerated.

Seaman second-class Sparks (who later became first-class} was later assigned to The USS Lexington aircraft carrier in the Pacific. One of his jobs on his ship was as a night watchman. And on one particular night, he saw a Bible on a table open to Isaiah chapter 21. Below are some of the verses from the chapter:

“For thus the Lord said to me:
“Go, set a watchman;
let him announce what he sees…”
 (Isaiah 21:6 ESV)

“Then he who saw cried out:
“Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord,
continually by day,
and at my post I am stationed
whole nights.
” (Isaiah 21:8 ESV)

“…Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?
The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.” (Isiah 21: 11-12 KJV)

While reading the Bible, my Dad realized that he was a watchman that night.

As followers of Jesus, he calls us to “watch and pray” (Matthew 26:40.) God has given us much more spiritual authority than most of us realize. We should never let fear back us down from our assignment as prayer warriors.

“And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.” – Ezekial 22:30

A spiritual Watchman watches out for the welfare of others through intercessory prayer. Just like a military sentry, we must remain at our post in prayer – spiritually alert on behalf of others. When a person, Church, or nation starts drifting away from God, we become vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. A Watchmen’s call is to warn those we are spiritually responsible for and to pray for revival.

God calls some to stand watch over Nations, geographical regions, cities, and Churches. We all have different assignments. But the Lord expects all of us to pray for those in positions of authority(1 Timothy 2:1-4.) Those who watch and pray sometimes receive revelation or spiritual insights before conflict arises. Such spiritually sensitive people should be accountable to elders in a local Church. It’s important to share with leadership what you believe the Lord is revealing to you. Then leave it to the elders to pray over. It’s their responsibility to accept or reject your guidance.

As we engage in intercessory prayer, we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. And God may reveal to us the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11.) I believe God gives us insight so that we can pray God’s kingdom into the situation. As a person of prayer, you can influence the culture around you – if you are diligent and refuse to give up. God is sovereign, but there are some things he will not do until we ask him ( James 4:2-3.)

Our goal is to become discerning, not suspicious. And discernment comes from time spent with God in prayer. Knowing and obeying Scripture is essential to our roles as prayer warriors. We must embrace a wartime mentality while realizing that we are at war with spiritual entities, not people. Philosophies and ideologies that contradict God’s truth are weapons that the adversary uses to destroy societies.

No matter the sphere of spiritual influence that God assigns you, know that your prayers on behalf of others will make a difference.
